Let’s start with Be Easy Brewing in Hirosaki. This brewery has a seriously interesting backstory.
Mugi
Hirosaki makes me think of apples, but who’s brewing there?
Hop Bro
Gareth Burns. He’s American, and a former U.S. Air Force bomb disposal specialist. He came to Aomori when he was assigned to Misawa Air Base.
Mugi
What? From bomb disposal to brewing beer!? That’s such a huge gap!
Hop Bro
He discovered craft beer in Tokyo around 2008 and got hooked on homebrewing, then opened in Hirosaki in 2016. The first floor is the brewery and the second floor is the taproom, "Gareth’s Hideaway."
Mugi
A hideaway! Even the name sounds fun. What kind of beer do they make?
Hop Bro
Here’s the fun part: the beer names are in Tsugaru dialect. They’ve brewed more than 150 varieties, and they also use local ingredients like apples, strawberries, and Tsugaru rice. Their "Apple Pie Ala Mode," a collaboration with United Arrows, is a Berliner Weisse brewed with apple juice, cinnamon, and vanilla, and it really tastes like apple pie.
Mugi
What? A beer that tastes like apple pie is way too intriguing!
Hop Bro
Their quality is well proven too. At the German international beer competition Finest Beer Selection 2024, "Aomori Ale" scored 93 points and was certified as a top-tier product. Among 825 entries from 16 countries, it earned the highest score from Japan.
Mugi
Wow. It’s such a great story when someone from overseas falls in love with Aomori, makes Tsugaru-dialect beers, and gets recognized worldwide.
Hop Bro
They also run a farm called Be Easy Farms, so they’re involved from cultivating ingredients onward. Even in their 10th year, they’re still pushing forward as a brewery.
