RE.beer, which is a two-minute walk from Ikegami Station, is a brewery that’s full of love for Ota Ward.
Mugi
Love for Ota Ward? What does beer have to do with Ota Ward?
Hop Bro
It’s run by Sachiko Ohya, the president of Taiho Co., Ltd., and this place was designed by students from Japan Engineering College, built by Sun You Construction in Minami-Yukigaya, Ota Ward, and even the brewing equipment was made by a factory in Ota Ward. It’s literally 'Made in OTA.'
Mugi
What! Students designed it, a local factory built the equipment... everything was made in Ota Ward!?
Hop Bro
Exactly. It opened in January 2023, so it’s still pretty new, and the concept is 'wa' - pairing craft beer with Japanese food. They also serve sake, including rare local varieties from all over Japan.
Mugi
Craft beer and Japanese food, huh. What kind of beers do they have?
Hop Bro
They usually have around six house-brewed beers on tap, and from what I saw, there were playful, local-ingredient beers like 'Strawberry Ale' and 'Kabu ga Agaru Ale.' They also have one or two guest beers.
Mugi
'Kabu ga Agaru Ale'!? That name is funny! It sounds lucky.
Hop Bro
Ohya’s background is interesting too. She originally worked in insurance sales, visiting factories in Ota Ward. When she was 35, she started thinking she wanted to open her own shop someday, and after hearing from a client that a craft beer brewery had been built in Ota Ward, she entered the world of beer from there.
Mugi
From insurance sales to craft beer!? That’s a huge change...
Hop Bro
And her company has the philosophy of aiming to be 'the kindest company in Japan with people with disabilities,' so for beer production they ask people with disabilities to help with bottling and labeling. They’re creating jobs through beer.
Mugi
Wow... that means drinking the beer is a way to support them too, right? Ikegami feels close by, so I’m definitely going!
