Okei Brewery in Nippori is Arakawa Ward's first craft beer brewery. The production manager, Yosuke Matsuyama, is impressive too. He used to be a chef, but he learned beer brewing from scratch and made a complete career change.

What, from chef to brewer? That's a totally different world, isn't it?

It's backed by a group that runs several restaurants in Shinbashi, and during the pandemic they decided to turn a crisis into an opportunity and launch the brewery. Since their direction is to make beer that pairs well with food, being a former chef has actually become a strength.

So it's beer designed with the meal first. What kind of beers do they have?

Their flagship is a pale ale called Okepe! It uses Cascade hops for a refreshing drinkability and a solid bitterness. They also have a hazy IPA called Arakawa HAZY Under the Bridge, known for its grapefruit-like fruity aroma.

"Arakawa HAZY Under the Bridge" is such a cool name! That means under the bridge on the Arakawa, right?

I like how they really lean into local place names. They even have something like Nippori Kelsch, a crisp German Cologne-style beer. What's more, they constantly update their recipes, and if they change even a little, they change the name too. It's a system where you can meet a new beer every time you visit.

You can drink something new every time? That's the kind of place that makes you want to come back again and again.

What's more, the chef in charge of food, Chef Tanaka, has over 10 years of French culinary experience and serves dishes designed with beer pairing in mind. It's right in front of Nippori Minami Park, so you can grab takeout and enjoy a daytime beer in the park too.

Fresh craft beer in the park! I definitely want to go on a nice day. And I heard it's even available as a Furusato Nozei return gift, so it's a point of pride for Arakawa residents.
