At Cycad Brewing, the standout is brewer Kazunori Fujiura. He won the AHA Homebrewer of the Year at the American national homebrewing competition, and he is the only foreign recipient ever to win it.

What! Number one in the U.S.? A Japanese brewer reaching the top in an American beer competition is incredible, isn't it?

It really is. Fujiura, together with Hiroyoshi Tobara, who runs the beer pub Gremlin in Hatagaya, and Kosuke Uematsu of STYLE BREW WORKS, started Cycad after the three hit it off while drinking together at Gremlin.

Meeting at a beer pub and then starting a brewery together really feels like such a craft beer origin story!

The location is great too. It's inside a building called NishiikeMart in Nishiikebukuro, a renovated Showa-era wooden market, and the space has a woody feel, like a New York cafe. At the entrance stands a cycad, which is where the brewery name comes from.
Mugi
Wow! So cycad refers to that plant. There is such a stylish place right near Ikebukuro?
Hop Bro
The beer theme is "Smooth & Clean." A recommended choice is "Dyer," a Vermont-style IPA made with Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops for a juicy finish. They also have a porter called "Salt Caramel Po-taro," and the name alone is pretty striking.
Mugi
What is that! Salt Caramel Po-taro!? I can't stop thinking about the name... I want to try it!

Fujiura originally ran a brewpub called "Snark Liquid Works," but in April 2023 the three of them relaunched it as Cycad. The following year, they also added American BBQ place "PHAT Q."
Mugi
BBQ and craft beer! That's the best combination. I like that you can soak in this whole vibe with just a short walk from Ikebukuro.
