Baird Brewery Gardens Shuzenji released Brewer's Nightmare Rye IPA on September 1. The new beer comes in at 7.0% ABV and is described as spicy, hoppy, and vividly drinkable. True to Baird's style, the beer is presented not only as a flavor profile, but as a story about the work behind the brew.
A difficult grain, embraced on purpose
According to brewer Bryan's notes, rye is one of the trickier ingredients in beer making because of its gluten-related stickiness. In this release, rye makes up 25-30% of the grist, which meant lautering took far longer than usual. A normal brew day would finish that stage in about 90 minutes, but this batch needed 178 minutes. The name "Brewer's Nightmare" reflects that labor directly.
Built around rye and hops
The product page highlights the combination of spicy rye malt character and fruity hop expression. Its specs are notable too: IBU 75 and SRM 7.0, with floor-malted pilsner, rye, and Munich malt, plus roasted barley and Japanese rock candy sugar. It is a clear example of Baird using style, process, and flavor in the same frame.
Brewed in Shuzenji
Baird Brewery Gardens Shuzenji is the brewery's farm-style home in Izu City, Shizuoka. The site sits along the Kano River and opened its 20-tap tasting room in June 2014. Surrounded by nature, it has become a place where Baird Beer connects local landscape with a wide range of characterful beers.
The label shows the critical lautering stage, making the brewing process itself part of the visual identity. For beer fans, it is a release that is worth reading as much as tasting.
