Habu Port Brewing, based in Oshima Town, Tokyo, has announced the release of Planet Stout, a seasonal beer for autumn and winter. The brewery made the announcement on Instagram, although the post available for this report does not specify an exact release date or detailed sales locations.

Planet Stout is brewed with sweet potatoes from Izu Oshima that are roasted before being used in the beer. The brewery describes a flavor profile that combines sweet, roasted notes reminiscent of baked sweet potato with chocolate-like character. Its roasted malt profile and island-grown ingredient give the stout a distinctly local identity.

The beer’s name and concept are linked to Ura-Sabaku, or “裏砂漠,” a striking volcanic landscape on Mount Mihara. The area’s dark, barren terrain has an otherworldly quality, which is reflected in the stout’s color and name. This approach is consistent with Habu Port Brewing’s broader aim of expressing Oshima’s landscapes and culture through beer.

Habu Port Brewing is the first craft brewery established on Izu Oshima. Located in the historic fishing-port district of Habu, the brewery was founded after representative Koji Yoshimoto studied brewing from the ground up and spent roughly three and a half years developing the project. Its lineup includes beers made with locally grown hops, as well as beers incorporating ingredients such as banana leaf.

Planet Stout looks suited to slow drinking on a cool autumn or winter evening. Beer fans planning a visit to Oshima should check the brewery’s official updates for the release date, availability, and serving locations before making the trip.
