Fukuoka Craft Brewing in Okagaki, Fukuoka Prefecture, is now selling "Sea and Tomato Mexican Ale #2," a beer inspired by the michelada. This second batch uses tomato juice with clam extract and revises the balance of habanero salsa and celery powder.
Fukuoka Craft Brewing is selling Sea and Tomato Mexican Ale #2 on its official website. The price is 715 yen (tax included), the style is Mexican ale / happoshu, and the alcohol content is 4.0%. The JAN code is 4595559305011.
This beer is a product inspired by the Mexican beer cocktail "michelada." The product page says the background comes from the brewer's experience of working for about 12 years at a Mexican restaurant and also visiting Mexico. Along with encounters with tequila, tacos, burritos, and nopal, what left the strongest impression was the michelada made with tomato juice containing clam extract.
A michelada does not have one fixed recipe, and its form varies by region and by shop, from versions enjoyed with a squeeze of lime to ones that include tequila. This product follows the direction of using plenty of tomato juice with clam extract, while reducing the amount of habanero salsa and adding celery powder for #2. The fact that the changes from the previous release are clearly described shows that this is not simply a re-release, but an ongoing project with the recipe refined further.
Fukuoka Craft Brewing is known for using medium-hard water drawn from 50 meters underground in Okagaki, Fukuoka Prefecture, and it promotes beer making that takes advantage of that water. As a beer that combines local water with the experience gained at a Mexican restaurant, it is a product with a clearly distinctive identity that feels very much like a craft beer from Fukuoka.
