On May 21, Novel Craft Brewing (Suginami, Tokyo) began serving its new beer 'Over Dub' from 5 p.m. The style is Dark Saison, and the alcohol content is 5%. It is designed so that the toasty character of roasted malt is joined by the subtle fruitiness and spiciness derived from saison yeast.

In terms of flavor, it has depth reminiscent of cocoa and raisins, while the finish is dry. It seems like a beer you can sip slowly, and it should also work well as a food beer. The brewery also mentions pairings with meat dishes, as well as cheese and cake.

Novel Craft Brewing is a brewery based in Suginami Ward, and it began brewing in 2024, making it a relatively new operation. It also runs direct beer bars, including "Novel Craft" in Chitosekarasuyama and "reverb" in Takaido, and one of its notable traits is how closely brewery updates and storefront operations are connected, as seen here.

In this post, along with the announcement of 'Over Dub,' they also noted a bottle rerelease of their flagship saison 'Looper,' as well as that beers opened at a recent tap takeover are still available. The setup makes you want to reach for both the new release and the regular lineup, as well as other labels.

The question is how they balanced roasted aroma and saison-like dryness at this somewhat unusual destination of a dark saison. As a new beer from a small brewery in Suginami, it's one that beer lovers will want to check out at least once.
