O-Beer’s “La Pensée Sauvage” to Pair with Smoked Fish at Chourakukan
Kyoto-based brewery O-Beer will participate in “Art Festival in CHOURAKUKAN 2026” at Hotel Chourakukan on September 27, 2026. Its Belgian-inspired draft beer, La Pensée Sauvage, will be paired with smoked striped jack and seasonal eggplant in a one-day-only mariage event.
Hotel Chourakukan in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district will host “Art Festival in CHOURAKUKAN 2026” on September 27, 2026. The fifth edition of the festival focuses on architecture and hospitality culture, bringing together food, art, and traditional experiences inside the historic Important Cultural Property.
One of the festival’s featured food-and-drink pairings will highlight La Pensée Sauvage, a draft craft beer from Kyoto-based brewery O-Beer. The beer will be served with striped jack marinated with fennel, smoked over cherry wood, and accompanied by roasted eggplant. Its bitterness, citrus notes, and spice character are intended to complement the fish’s richness, smoky aroma, and the seasonal vegetable. The pairing is priced at ¥1,000, or two event vouchers.
La Pensée Sauvage is a Belgian-style beer brewed by O-Beer. Orange peel and coriander contribute citrus and spice nuances, making it suitable for pairing with food rather than being enjoyed only on its own. The mariage program will also feature combinations involving Madeira, kombucha, yuzu-based drinks, and Chourakukan’s original blended iced tea.
O-Beer is a nano brewery based in Kyoto’s Kita Ward. Inspired by Belgium’s diverse beer culture and flexible brewing traditions, the brewery develops its own interpretations in Kyoto rather than simply reproducing Belgian beers. Its approach incorporates local agriculture, industry, and culture, with the goal of creating beers that feel rich and meaningful to the people who share everyday life around them.
The festival runs from 10:00 to 17:30, with admission priced at ¥1,000. The mariage offerings will be available at several locations within the hotel. For beer enthusiasts, the event offers a chance to experience O-Beer’s signature beer in a historic setting and to consider how citrus, spice, bitterness, smoke, and seasonal ingredients interact in a single pairing.
