VANAVASA, a beer pub in Kamakura, is serving four special barrel-aged saisons from YOROCCO.
The lineup was made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes harvested last autumn and includes:
- Pinot Noir # 40
- Pinot Noir # 57
- Pinot Noir 無印 (Yorocco House Barrel)
- Chardonnay (Yorocco House Barrel)
The beers use grape pomace from Beau Paysage, a winery known for its wines. Pinot Noir # 40 and Pinot Noir # 57 were aged in barrels that had been used immediately beforehand for wine maturation at the winery, adding another layer of barrel history to the beers.
The four releases should make for an engaging comparison. The Pinot Noir versions invite a look at how different barrels shape the beer, while the Chardonnay version offers a contrasting expression based on white grapes. Alongside the rustic, lightly tart character associated with saisons, the wine-derived ingredients and barrel influence are likely to bring additional fruit and fermentation complexity.
