Irish Red "Michisugara" tapped at Karuizawa's brewpub
At GOOD AFTERNOON TAP ROOM, the tap room on the second floor of karuizawa Q, a brewpub in Naka-Karuizawa, Nagano, a new keg has been put on tap. Introduced as the kind of beer that fits this place perfectly, where beer brewed on the first floor can be enjoyed just upstairs, is the brewery's own Irish Red, Michisugara.
"Michisugara" is 5.0% ABV and 24 IBU. It uses Maris Otter as the base, with caramel malt and a small amount of roasted malt layered on top to add gentle biscuit-like toastiness, along with notes of caramel and a hint of dried fruit. Rather than pushing a flashy character to the front, the beer is said to have been crafted for a calm, balanced drink with a soft mouthfeel and restrained carbonation.
The style is Irish Red. While malt-forward, it is not too heavy, and the further you drink, the more its toasty character and subtle sweetness linger. It is the sort of beer you can empty a glass of without effort, and one that is especially appealing for pairing with food.
GOOD AFTERNOON TAP ROOM's strength lies in its Nordic-inspired space overlooking Mt. Asama, where guests can enjoy house-brewed beer and food. In the calm atmosphere of Naka-Karuizawa, it is a place to savor not just the beer on its own, but also its combinations with dishes, at a relaxed pace. This new "Michisugara" is the kind of beer you want to drop in for on a whim as part of everyday life, and one worth checking out.
