Usami Brewery in Ito, Shizuoka introduced on Instagram that its Izu LEMON BEER won top gold in the fruit beer category at the Japan Great Beer Awards 2026. The post also highlights the brewery's use of Izu deep seawater and its Europe-influenced brewing approach.
Usami Brewery, based in Usami, Ito City, Shizuoka, has won top gold in the fruit beer category at the Japan Great Beer Awards 2026 with its Izu LEMON BEER. In the Instagram post, the brewery also shared more about the beers and brewing style behind the award.
According to the post, the brewery makes aromatic, full-flavored ales in an environment surrounded by sea and mountains. Its brewing approach builds on methods passed down from a European brewmaster, while also bringing in Izu water and local ingredients. Izu LEMON BEER uses JA Fujizu's branded lemons, `Izu Lemon`, with the peel and white pith carefully handled to bring out a fresh aroma and a clean bitterness. The beer is 3% ABV and is recommended with seafood, salads, seafood pizza, and grilled chicken.
The post also revisits Usami Brewery's other core beers. `Usami Golden Ale`, made with 100% barley malt and Izu deep seawater, is described as a mellow golden ale with fine foam and mineral-driven balance. It previously won silver in the Free Light Ale category at the 2016 International Beer Cup. `Usami SAISON`, also brewed with 100% barley malt and Izu deep seawater, is presented as a spicier beer built around four types of malt and hops, designed to pair well with meat dishes.
The award gives added attention to Usami Brewery's long-running focus on local ingredients, seawater from Izu, and brewing methods rooted in European tradition. It is a neat example of how a regional brewery can turn local character into an award-winning fruit beer.
