Four days for Obon

THE FARMHOUSE in Yamanouchi, Nagano will serve bar food for four days, from August 13 to 16. Hours are 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. As a taproom-style bar from Tamamura Honten, the focus is on small dishes meant to be enjoyed with drinks rather than a full meal.

This week’s menu

- Rice and spelt from Tamamura Honten with mini red chicken curry
- Chilled tofu with botan koshou miso
- Yomegi sake-kasu cassata
- Quick-pickled cucumber
- Salt-boiled kura-kake beans

The curry pairs rice and spelt grown by Tamamura Honten with a spiced red chicken curry. THE FARMHOUSE keeps the portion modest so it works as a bar snack. The spelt also connects the food to drinks such as HOUSE LAGER and Yuruburu spelt from Shiga Kogen Beer, making it easy to move back and forth between the glass and the plate.

The chilled tofu comes with a miso made from botan koshou, a traditional vegetable from northern Nagano. Rather than pushing heat, it leans into sweetness and depth. Dessert is a sake-kasu cassata made with Yomegi sake lees, strained yogurt, cream, nuts, and dried fruit.

Drinks to pair

The post also points to Shiga Kogen Beer, Yamabushi, and NEW ENGI as drinks to cycle through during the visit. For anyone planning a drink stop in Yamanouchi over the holiday, THE FARMHOUSE offers a compact, beer-friendly menu to go with it.
