Mountain River Brewery Introduces Green Tea Ale “Chahanji” in Kugayama
Mountain River Brewery in Kugayama, Tokyo, has introduced “Chahanji,” a collaborative Green Tea Ale made with sencha from Ryuso in Shizuoka. Brewed to bring out the tea’s umami and finished with a touch of lemon, it is designed to pair naturally with food.
Mountain River Brewery, a craft brewery in Kugayama, Suginami, Tokyo, has introduced “Chahanji,” a beer made with Japanese green tea.
Chahanji is a Green Tea Ale created in collaboration with nokNok, a project that explores new ways to enjoy tea. The beer uses sencha grown by tea farmer Mochizuki in Ryuso, Shizuoka, introduced to the brewery through nokNok. The tea is treated much like a dashi ingredient, allowing its umami and flavor to come through in the finished beer.
A small amount of lemon adds a refreshing, clean finish. Chahanji has an ABV of 4.0%, an IBU of 20, and a yellow color. The listed malt bill includes Pilsner, wheat, and sour malts, while the hops are identified as Ht and Hood.
The name reflects the brewery’s wish for both tea and beer to remain part of everyday life, as well as its intention to create a beer that belongs alongside a meal. Its moderate strength and crisp finish should make it a natural match for Japanese dishes and other light food.
Located in Kugayama, Mountain River Brewery offers a chance to experience the brewery’s own approach to ingredient-driven craft beer. For drinkers curious about how sencha’s aroma and umami translate into beer, Chahanji is a particularly distinctive pour to seek out.
