Seasonal Bock Released on May 1
Baird Brewery Garden Shuzenji (Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture) released "Four Sisters Spring Bock" on May 1. The product page lists the price at 3,600 yen and the alcohol content at 7%.
This beer is a seasonal release brewed in the spirit of German Maibock. The description says it finishes with a bread-like flavor, a healthy and pleasantly refreshing character, and a firm alcoholic presence. Its color is a deep reddish copper gold, the aroma is sweet and floral, the mouthfeel is rich and malty, and the finish is rounded and smooth.
A Lager Style Carrying the Story of the Four Sisters
According to Brian Baird's brewing notes, this beer was created to celebrate the birth of the Baird family's fourth daughter in 2004 and to commemorate the special bond between the sisters. Its ingredients include clean soft water, floor-malted pils, sour, Vienna, wheat, domestically produced rock candy sugar, fresh hops, and house lager yeast (North America).
The label is based on a photo taken in August 2015 of the four sisters lined up on a beach in Amami Oshima watching the sunset. The product page explains that, as an expression of that bond, the character choice was "strong bond" rather than the kanji for "four sisters."
Shuzenji Brewery as a Local Base
The releasing brewery, Baird Brewery Garden Shuzenji, is located by the Kano River in Shuzenji, Izu City. The grounds include a 20-tap tasting room, a beer deck, and a viewing walkway, and it operates as a place that connects the natural environment with brewing. In addition to beer production, it also works on pesticide-free agriculture, another hallmark of this brewery.
This release, which pairs a seasonal bock with a family story, can be seen as a beer that reflects the atmosphere of Shuzenji and Baird's brewing philosophy.
