Episode 190 – The Other Golden City, CO Brewery

Posted By John on July 11th, 2010

Mad_Molly_Brown-Ale Sometimes you can’t compete on size or price. Sometimes you have to compete on quality. Golden City Brewery shares its home town with a little brewer know as Coors. They can’t take them on capacity or price and probably don’t want to, but in quality they have found their battlefield.

We tried their Mad Molly Brown Ale and Lookout Stout. The Lookout Stout was good and in general what you would expect. The Mad Molly Brown was an amazing brew. Far more complex than we generally expected from a brown. Sweet caramel and coffee flavors mingled with roasted almost nutty flavors. One of the best brown ales that we’ve ever had.

Epsiode 189 – Colorado Local Lager

Posted By John on July 11th, 2010

Colorado_Native_LabelOne of our panelists found this beer while touring the Coors Brewery in Golden Colorado. As the name suggests Colorado Local Lager is intended for local Colorado market. On an interesting note the Coors name appears nowhere on the bottle.

The beer itself is a nice amber color. Some malty sweetness with a undertone of a light hop flavor. Compared to the silver bullet this beer has quite a bit of flavor. Compared to most craft beers it is a bit mild.

Episode 188 – Continuum Ale From Phantom Canyon

Posted By John on June 11th, 2010

Phantom Canyon Brewing Company’s Continuum Ale offers a refreshing Summer treat. Nice thirst quenching with more subtleties and flavor than quite a few Summer offerings.

As a bonus 25% of the proceeds go to repair a local fountain in Colorado Springs, CO.

Always nice when good beer helps a good cause.

Nothing Under 10% ABV – Podcast

Posted By John on May 22nd, 2009

urthel_bc_smallTrying three beers at 11% and higher ABV is probably a questionable practice, but we did it anyway.  In order of ABV and tasting; Quadrium Ale from Urthel Samaranth (11%), Belzebuth from Brasserie Grain D’Orge (13%), and The Beast from Avery Brewing (16.31%).

For music we pulled a band that we’ve enjoyed many times. The Dust Rhinos and their song Here’s to You. Think Budweiser’s real men of genius ads in catchy song form. Good stuff.

Avery Brewing – The Beast

Beer: The Beast

Brewery: Avery Brewing in Boulder, Colorado

Style: Grand Crue

ABV: 16.31% When your talking this high of alcohol hundredths of a percentage matter. To put that in perspective that’s around four shots (1oz) of whiskey. For the home brewers out there the original gravity is 1.135%

Reviewed: 20-May-2009 on Episode 141

Appearance: Brown color with a cream head.

Aroma: Raisin, brown sugar, oak, alcohol, molasses are all in the aroma on this beer.

Taste: The aroma gives a good idea of the taste on this beer with similar notes of molasses, raisin, oak, and alcohol in the flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a definite warmth from the alcohol.

Aftertaste: Lingering sweetness and alcoholic tastes.

Overall: Well made with nice complexities that make it a fine beer.

Notes: A strong beer with great flavors and a pleasant alcohol warmth if you enjoy big beers. This is a sipping beer. We thought it would go great with a cigar. Further tests proved that to be true. On another note Marissa did feel the strong alcoholic nature of this beer made it undrinkable. This is something to keep in mind if purchasing this beer for others.
