Schell’s Brewing – Pilsner
Beer: Pilsner
Brewery: August Schell Brewing Co. in New Ulm, Minnesota
Reviewed: 24-Jun-09 on Episode 146
Appearance: Golden yellow with a white head.
Aroma: Sweet and roasted malt flavors.
Taste: Malt sweetness with noble hops undertones. Unfortunately the astringent flavors pulled away from what was otherwise enjoyable.
Mouthfeel: Light body with medium carbonation.
Aftertaste: The astringency lingered. This obscured the favorable flavors in teh aftertaste.
Overall: Admittedly we served this warmer than it probably should have been and will try it again in the future. If a beer needs to be served cold to disguise its flaws it doesn’t say much for the beer though.
Best enjoyed at: Some place very cold as to hide the astringency.

Schell’s Brewing – Pale Ale
Beer: Pale Ale
Brewery: August Schell Brewing Co. in New Ulm, Minnesota
Reviewed: 24-Jun-09 on Episode 146
Appearance: Light copper in color with a white head.
Aroma: Citrusy grapefruit hops aroma with undertones of malty sweetness.
Taste: The hops came off a bit off in the flavor. There was a flavor with the hop character that didn’t seem to go with the grapefruit flavors that were present.
Mouthfeel: Light body with medium carbonation.
Aftertaste: Lingering grapefruit flavors
Overall: Fair is the word. Not horrible and not great.
Best enjoyed at: A bar were it is the only hoppy beer.

Leinenkugel – Summer Shandy
Beer: Summer Shandy
Brewery: Leinenkugel Brewing
ABV: 4.2%

Appearance: Disturbingly bright yellow in color with a bleach white head.
Aroma: Lemony fresh which is slightly disturbing.
Taste: The lemon and malt flavors balance out well. This surprised the hellout of us as the lemon flavor was so dominant in the aroma.
Mouthfeel: light body with medium carbonation. Kinda like carbonated lemonade.
Aftertaste: Clean finish with no crazy lingering flavors.
Overall: There is a majority of our panel that feel shandies are an abomination before the beer gods. That said, this was the best shandy we’ve had and even though it won’t be a regular in our glass it was a well made beerish drink. Thanks to Brian M. for bringing the beer.
Best enjoyed at: an outdoor wrestling match.

Mad River Brewing – Stealhead Scotch Style Porter

Appearance: Deep brown bordering on black with a tan head.
Aroma: Bittersweet chocolate and roasted flavors.
Taste: Nice sweetness with roasted characters. Some good bittersweet chocolate and light coffee flavors as well.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied decent beer.
Aftertaste: Roasted flavors finish it off. This is what you would expect
Overall: What the hell is a Scotch Style Porter? We know porter. We know Scotch Porter. Is it a porter with an accent? We don’t know. Other than an ambiguous style name the beer was pretty good. Nice roastey dark beer, that despite the label art did not make me want to wear a kilt.
Best enjoyed at: a Scotch style event.

Episode 144 – The Schell Game Part 2
This week was the second of our Schell’s Brewing podcasts. We looked at another beer from the August Shell’s Brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota.
Always on the quest for good beer we sampled some beer from a local brewer. Three beers all of good quality with a some lively discussion.
We also started the four week Hops Challenge™. Devised by a wise beer sage in Kearney, NE, it is an experiment to see whether a love of hops can be acquired.

Episode 143 – The Schell Game Part 1
This week featured the first of three episodes reviewing the beers of Schell’s Brewing. We tried their dark, maifest, and stout with mixed results. For music this week, we featured Marc Gunn’s tribute to a great BBC sci-fi comedy with his song The Mining Ship Red Dwarf. If you have never seen Red Dwarf, it is available on DVD and is one of the greatest TV shows ever made, in our humble opinion.

Aroma: Roasted malt and vegetal, with undertones of a soapy aroma.
Taste: Dark malt, with vinegar and soapy undertones.
Mouthfeel: Light body with medium carbonation.
Aftertaste: The soapy taste lingered a bit.
Overall: Perhaps we received a bad batch, but the soapy flavor ruined the beer for us.
