Episode 144 - The Schell Game Part 2
Written by John Schuff on June 12, 2009 – 5:00 pm -This week was the second of our Schell’s Brewing podcasts. We looked at another beer from the August Shell’s Brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota.
Always on the quest for good beer we sampled some beer from a local brewer. Three beers all of good quality with a some lively discussion.
We also started the four week Hops Challenge™. Devised by a wise beer sage in Kearney, NE, it is an experiment to see whether a love of hops can be acquired.

Episode 143 - The Schell Game Part 1
Written by John Schuff on June 5, 2009 – 5:00 pm -
This week featured the first of three episodes reviewing the beers of Schell’s Brewing. We tried their dark, maifest, and stout with mixed results. For music this week, we featured Marc Gunn’s tribute to a great BBC sci-fi comedy with his song The Mining Ship Red Dwarf. If you have never seen Red Dwarf, it is available on DVD and is one of the greatest TV shows ever made, in our humble opinion.

Appearance: Brown with a white loose head.
Aroma: Roasted malt and vegetal, with undertones of a soapy aroma.
Taste: Dark malt, with vinegar and soapy undertones.
Mouthfeel: Light body with medium carbonation.
Aftertaste: The soapy taste lingered a bit.
Overall: Perhaps we received a bad batch, but the soapy flavor ruined the beer for us.
Notes: Potentially good beer ruined by flaws. If you have had better luck with this beer shoot me an email at john@brewcast.net.

Appearance: Golden brown with white head.
Aroma: Roasted malt with floral undertones.
Taste: The taste contained roasted and sweet flavors with a slight floral taste.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with a dry finish.
Aftertaste: Acidic finish. Seemed almost out of place for the other flavors in the beer.
Overall: Decent malty beer.
Notes: Other than the finish being a bit off it is a pretty good beer. It would be a nice Summer evening beer.

Aroma: Coffee and bitter sweet chocolate.
Taste: The bitter sweet chocolate comes through with the coffee playing in the undertones.
Mouthfeel: Medium light body.
Aftertaste: Roasted sweet finish.
Overall: The coffee and bitter sweet chocolate flavors define this beer.

Two From Chicago - Podcast
Written by John Schuff on May 27, 2009 – 5:00 pm -Episode 142
We finished up the beers Ryan acquired on his trip to Chicago this week. We enjoyed a bready farmhouse ale and a very stout brown ale. Always nice when both beers are tasty. We are sure the good people of take pride in their local breweries. No time for music to drink to this week, but we’ll see if we can’t fit it in next week.

Flossmoor Station - Pullman Brown Ale
Written by John Schuff on May 27, 2009 – 4:48 pm -
Beer: Pullman Brown Ale
Brewery: Flossmoor Station Brewing Co. in Chicago Illinois
Style: Brown Ale
ABV: 6%
Reviewed: 26-May-09 on Episode 142
Appearance: Deep black in color with a tan head.
Aroma: Chocolate, molasses and alcohol were prominent in the aroma.
Taste: Sweet malt, dark chocolate, coffee and alcohol were in the flavor.
Mouthfeel: medium body, creamy with alcoholic warmth.
Aftertaste: residual sweetness and lingering alcoholic warmth.
Overall: A well made dark beer. We don’t know if it’s a brown ale, but it is tastey.
Notes: To our panel it came across more like a Imperial Stout. The alcohol we tasted and smelled would have been very agressive for a 6% beer. If by some chance of fate we recieved stout in a brown ale bottle the grades for this beer would be even higher.

After reading Richard’s notes, I’m pretty sure this wasn’t the brown unless the recipe has dramatically changes.
